I see your point about the value of empathy. As you suggest, there's not enough of it about. I suppose my concern in this case is that it comes with a lot of rage, not directed at anyone who has caused war, starvation or neglect, but doctors trying to do the best they can.Joe Treasurehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11452665782271458318noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2262139109574458128.post-12663134154454091852017-08-07T01:37:30.343-07:002017-08-07T01:37:30.343-07:00I think you are spot on, Joe. Here are some thoughts:

- Until I read this, I never really thought about the mass sentiment and sentimentality that occurs especially when someone (like Diana) dies. Sometimes it is unnerving when some hateful politician dies and he is mourned despite his numerous flaws and misdeeds. And indeed when a popular actor dies, the widespread mourning on a national scale seems out of proportion to the actual actor and more in proportion to the parts the actor played. This seems especially strange when the actor was a miserable, miserly person in real life.

On the other hand, and there is another hand, our society is increasingly inured to caring and empathy for other humans. With all the deaths by war, starvation, or even simple neglect, perhaps it's better when people stop and express empathy for human life, even when the mourning is misplaced or out of proportion. Perhaps it is better to express any empathy for the lives of others, as an alternative to hunkering down and relating solely to electronic intercourse with our handheld devices. These polar opposites should not be our only 2 choices, but if I have to pick one, I'll pick being awake to the plight and destiny of others over disinterest and lack of caring.Infomaniachttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09370255616195877484noreply@blogger.com
